By its insertion in the Amazon, the Pará Federal University is an institution of higher education that forms a range of professionals with vocation for the biological and medical research. For this reason, the Institute of biological sciences (ICB) of this University has developed and perfected skills in these strategic fields of knowledge. The historical development of biology at UFPA led to the creation of a program of research and graduate studies in biological sciences, in 1985. In the area of life sciences, within this comprehensive program and predecessor and from the Group of teachers/researchers who were part of the area of Concentration in biology of infectious agents and Parasitological, ICB/UFPA concentrated actions in the development of a vigorous Program of research and graduate studies in this area: the PPG in biology of infectious agents and Parasitological (PPG-BAIP) started in 2004 with the master course. At the end of the same year of 2004, the Biological Sciences area Committee III of CAPES, recognising the maturity the Faculty of PPG-BAIP, approved doctoral course with 4 concept. At the end of the first term of three years (2004/2006) the area Committee CB III granted the PPG-BAIP 5 concept, both for the master's course and doctoral course, confirming the quality and importance of the program, which is perfectly inserted into the reality.
Therefore, a graduate course in this area, including the masters and Doctorate, which still maintains its note 5 in the last three-year mandates, have a considerable impact on the formation of human resources in the North, empowering professionals able to deal competently and specialized, the problems and issues related to health in the Amazon.
Currently the PPG BAIP has a frame composed of 27 teachers, among visitors and permanent employees, with expertise in the scientific areas of Microbiology and Parasitology, qualifying professionals, using the approach of the Biology, epidemiology, bacteriology, entomology, Helminthology, Molecular Genetics of microorganisms, Immunology, Immunogenetics, Malacology, Mycology, parasitology, Protozoology and Virology in order to improve not only the recent graduates of public and private local Universities , as well as those who were part of the other institutions in the Amazon.
